Instruction/Procedural Manuals

During my employment with Syva Company, a subsidiary of the national pharmaceutical manufacturer Syntex Corporation, my primary responsibility was the testing of electronic medical equipment.

At that time, the department was rapidly growing; more senior technicians trained newer ones; and no procedural manuals existed. I was soon promoted to Documentation Specialist and Interdepartmental Liaison in recognition of my superior communication skills, both oral and written. "You're the only one in your department who knows how to explain things," someone in Purchasing once told me.

Before I voluntarily left employment there, I created procedural manuals for the testing of all the electronic instruments I had worked on. The time required for a new tech to test an instrument was reduced from an all-day, trial-and-error procedure (whereby the tech would press keys in whatever order was required to reproduce the desired printout), to just under one hour per instrument. (A skilled tech could test two or even three instruments at the same time.) With the creation of my procedural manuals, new techs were able to get up to speed quickly, without the steep learning curve inherent in the trial-and-error method.

Please read these comments from my supervisor:

"Lisa continues to give herself high expectations and then challenges herself to meet them. Her dependence on supervision has been minimalized. [Her] flexibility...has enabled her to handle many various and diverse jobs and this has been used to the department's advantage. She is now...our document control monitor.

"Lisa...has been able to piece together incomplete documentation from various sources....

"Lisa sets an example to the rest of the department as far as ethics, job responsibilities, and professionalism. She works well with other departments and vendors.

"Organization is one of Lisa's strong points.... She plans for the monthly report better than her supervisor!

"Lisa's knowledge of Q.C. documentation and Materials paper flow has become apparent...with her invaluable help and troubleshooting for Accounting during the fiscal year inventory. Many favorable comments have been received from other departments regarding her ability and willingness to help them in problem situations. [S]he has been instrumental in introducing [the other department members] to the inspection files, documentation, and control forms of the Q.C. area."
